Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Chairman of the Indonesian Market Traders Association (IKAPPI) Abdullah Mansuri predicts that food prices during the Christmas and New Year 2024 (Nataru) moments will increase by up to 75%.

“We all know that we will face the big days of Christmas and New Year which we predict will experience an increase in food prices of up to 75%,” said Abdullah in his written statement, quoted on Friday (8/12/2023).

Abdullah revealed that some commodities that experienced high price spikes as of Thursday, December 7, 2023, include large red chilies or TW chilies at a price of Rp120,000 per kg, red chili peppers at Rp100,000 to Rp120,000 per kg, broiler chicken meat at Rp40,000 per kg, sugar at Rp18,000 per kg, garlic at Rp37,000 per kg, and shallots at Rp35,000 per kg.

Meanwhile, some commodities that have not experienced a decrease in prices, such as beef, chicken eggs, vegetables, and tomatoes, have experienced an increase from Rp15,000 per kg to Rp20,000 per kg.

Abdullah said they see no increase in demand for some of these commodities this week or now. But these commodities are influenced by minimal production, insufficient production resulting in price increases.

“We encourage the government to accelerate, strengthen production, and re-survey production before high demand for Christmas and New Year occurs,” he said.

Usually, Abdullah continued, the demand for Nataru occurs 1 week to 3 days before Christmas. And it will end after the new year.

“We ask the government to make efforts so that during Christmas and New Year, some commodities do not increase too high,” he concluded.
