The president of Kaulig Racing has requested a waiver for Corey Lajoie to be eligible for the championship. In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Morning Drive, he was posed with a question about Corey Heim from Tricon Garage potentially applying for a waiver as well, given his current standing despite missing races. This situation has created inner conflict for Rice as he had just requested a waiver for Lajoie. He explained the complexity of the situation, highlighting how Heim’s eligibility could affect Lajoie’s chances of finishing in the top 10 at the end of the regular season.
Heim’s case differs slightly from Lajoie’s as he elected to receive Truck points at the beginning of the season, even though he did not initially intend to compete for the championship. On the other hand, Lajoie opted to receive Cup Series points from his Daytona 500 race at the start of the season. Rice also mentioned Lajoie’s previous Truck Series starts and his request to NASCAR to include those points retroactively, which was denied. Despite these challenges, Rice is determined to give Lajoie a shot at making the playoffs by racing the rest of the season in the No. 10 truck.
Currently, Lajoie is trailing by 84 points with 13 races remaining. The discussion around waivers sparked differing opinions, with some arguing that drivers should commit to the series to earn points, while others believe that earning enough points on merit should grant eligibility for the championship without the need for a waiver.
